Our Mission Statement...

Terrific Fibers offers
the highest quality products available,
for the fiber arts
community.
From novice to expert,
we offer something for everyone,
at affordable prices.
The person behind the Terrific Fibers
company, who are ewe?
Joanne Pohlman has been a practicing
fiber artisan since she was a little
girl growing up on Long Island, knitting and crocheting clothes for her Barbie® dolls.
When she lived in Baltimore, she first visited The Mannings in Pennsylvania, and began spinning in 1989.
It goes without saying that she fell in love with the craft of spinning her own
yarns, making the whole fiber arts experience even richer. Once she
explored the world of hand dying her fibers, the whole colour spectrum came
alive in yarn for her.
She has worked for several well known shoppes around the
country, and is an accomplished teacher of the craft. She is also an
internationally known editor and is a published author in fiber arts magazines.
Here you see a spinning wheel which a neighbor of Joanne's Mom's was going to
throw away, years ago. This friend, named Doris, gave it to Joanne with
the proviso that "...it will never work again." Nothing like a
challenge in the hands of a strong willed child (being Joanne's husband
J ). Since
bobbins, maiden bar, uprights, pedal, crankshaft and distaff were all missing,
they ordered the parts as if they were rebuilding an Ashford Elizabeth, and then
custom crafted them to fit. Now Joanne has a fully functioning "Doris"
(everyone names their wheels something - and Doris is a fitting and loving name
for this beauty) which has the interchangeability with all of her other Ashford
wheels.
What project did you do, to start
spinning?

Joanne's first handspun project. Cotswold, a rare-breed sheep's
wool, purchased from a dedicated-to-the-breed farmer in the Baltimore area.
Joanne cleaned, carded and then spun on her first wheel, an Ashford Traditional,
hand finished in Tung Oil - which she still has. She then plied, and
knitted the yarn into a lovely sweater with her own embellishments.
Cabling down the front, an open collar, a nice twisted ribbing stitch framing
the cuffs and hip-length edge, with exquisite detailed-grain wooden buttons.
Still a special sweater to this day - nothing like your first, for memories.
After Santa brought the Oh-So desirable Ashford Knitter's Loom & book for
Christmas...
What do you get for your favorite Ashford distributor who has everything, for her
birthday in January?
JJJ
ANSWER: "Crayon." That's what Joanne's husband did. After
experimenting with several materials, he came up with this variation on a
favorite Ashford wheel, and you can see why its name is Crayon.
