Needle sizes: Ten pairs of 4.5", light gray needle heads in each
kit.
Ï 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10 ½, 11, 13 and 15 (U.S. sizes)
Ï When you discover your gauge calls for a needle one size larger or smaller
than you planned, with the flexibility of Denise Interchangeable Needles,
you’ll always have the right size ready.
v
Needle lengths/ Circular and Straight: By joining the
Interchangeable Needle heads to denim blue flexible cords, each of
the ten pairs makes:
Ï Straight needle lengths:
Ë 9", 13", 16", 20", 30", 34"
Ï Circular needle lengths:
Ë 17", 20", 22", 24", 26", 28", 33", 40", 50", 58"
Ï Denise is ideal for large or small knitting projects.
v
Combo needles: with any combination of above needle sizes and cord
lengths.
v
Stitch holders: There are six cords in each kit that can become
stitch holders.
Ï One each 5", 9", 12" 14" 16" and 19."
Ï There’s no need to move your knitting to a different stitch holder when
you’re knitting with Denise. Leave your knitting in place. Simply detach
the Interchangeable Needle head and replace it with one of the
four end buttons in each kit. Your knitting is safely held in place.
v
Comfortable to use: No more tired wrists or knocking needle ends.
Ï Flexible cords mean you always keep the weight of even the largest projects
in your lap, not bunched up heavily on your needle.
Ï Flexible cords also mean you can knit comfortably in seats with arms, or in
tight quarters such as on an airplane.
v
Neat and orderly: It’s all there when you need it.
Ï The navy blue, compact, sturdy case (7" by 8 ½") holds all the needles,
cords, extenders and buttons securely in place.
Ï Needles and parts always have a place to neatly return to, so no more
tangle of needles or searching for stitch holders.
v
Innovative connection, flexible and durable:
Ï Denise Interchangeable Needles and parts easily and securely "lock"
into place by twisting ¼ turn.
Ï Other companies’ connections screw together, and since a screw works by
turning, the natural turning of knitting can unscrew the connection.
Ï Denise knitters commonly report using kits that are 15-20 years old
and still going strong!
v
Airline Safe: Relax while traveling with your knitting.
Ï Standard needles are not allowed through airport security.
Ï Denise Interchange Needles are shorter than a pen and made of resin.
Ï Denise knitters are reporting no problems passing with them through
security checks at airports.
v
All parts are made in the U.S.A.

Information
Looking at those gleaming rows of needles and neatly
placed cords it’s easy to think, "What more could anyone possibly need?" Having
a Denise kit is like having a wonderful toolbox full of possibilities…such as
having more than one (or two, or three) projects going at the same time. Ah, but
we are knitters! It’s impossible to have too many parts unless they are
the wrong parts.
Get to know your kit and you may find you use one particular needle size more
often than the others, or two cord lengths, or you may have so many projects
going you need more end buttons to hold projects safe while they’re stashed in a
basket waiting for that opportune moment. OR you may be interested in something
new.
Our favorite new technique is knitting small things in the round with two
circular needles. All the cords you need to do this are already in the kit, but
it does require an extra pair of needle heads in the size you’re going to be
using.
Socks, hats, sleeves, all those small circumference projects that normally
require double pointed needles or very small circulars (see below about 16"
circulars) can now be done easily (and quite impressively) with two circular
needles.
For more on this technique, ask around at your local knitting shop or search
online for "knitting with two circular needles" and you should find some good
directions.
You can order a kit from Terrific Fibers
right here on the Internet, or if you need extra parts, post us with a list of
the parts you’d like to order and we'll be sure to get right back with you about
your needs (see eMail instructions at bottom of page).
All new parts are completely interchangeable
with older kits
We have changed the colors and some of the materials, but all will work
together. If you’ve ever had problems with the larger needle sizes being a bit
loose on the cords, we have retooled the molds and the 11s, 13s, and 15s are now
as tight as the smaller sizes.
Needles are available for $4.50 per pair (post an e-mail to us with your
exact needs and we'll get back about your specific ordering information)
(see eMail instructions at bottom of page).
You are covered for different cord lengths, even
to 16"
The new 9" cord is now being included in the kit! We had so
many requests for this length that we did some research. With the length of the
needle heads, a 16" circular doesn’t quite work, but a 17" works beautifully.
If you have an older kit and would like to get a 9" cord, all
of the cord lengths now in the kit are two for $4.50 (post an e-mail to us
with
your exact needs and we'll get back about your specific ordering information,
saying you'd like two 9" cords, or one 9" and one of another regular cord length
[5" 12" 14" 16" or 19"]) (see
eMail instructions at bottom of page).
The new longer cords are now available!
For all the knitters of afghans and one-piece sweaters and large garments and
Christmas tree skirts and whatever else you can imagine to knit on very long
cords, we have now added two new cord lengths to our stash. They are so long
they won’t fit in the case, but because they’re so flexible, they should curl up
nicely in your knitting bag. The new lengths are 40" and 52." With the needle
heads attached, these make 48" and 60" circulars.
To order, post an e-mail to us with your exact needs and we'll get back about
your specific ordering information (see eMail instructions
at bottom of page).
Smaller size needles are not available
We wish the answer to this question were yes, since we’d like some ourselves,
but unfortunately we have to say "NO." The unique locking system that helps make
Denise needles so enjoyable to use requires a diameter no smaller than the size
5 needles to maintain its strength. Sorry!
Being AIRLINE SAFE IS important
Yes, Denise needles are safe to take on flights. Because the needle
heads are plastic and slightly shorter than a pen, they pose no threat. We do
suggest that you pack the kit itself in your luggage if you plan to knit on your
trip and only take the parts you’ll need for the flight as carry-on since, as
one friend commented when looking for the first time at an open kit, "this thing
looks surgical!" The uninitiated may be slightly suspicious.
A second recommendation is that you take along an extra pair of end buttons.
When you’re ready to go through the x-ray portion of security, remove the needle
heads from your knitting and place them with your pens and pencils. Put the end
buttons on the cords to secure your knitting, and through you go. (We say this
as an extra precaution, but we just take our knitting through "as is" and
haven’t had trouble yet or heard of any from our customers.) Then enjoy your
knitting while you sit and wait for your flight and all during flying time.
Easy. This is how life should be.
Warranty
The lifetime guarantee covers all knitting parts on the new kits for
normal knitting use. This means if something breaks without you sitting on it or
your dog or cat chewing on it (and dogs and cats do seem to like doing this), we
will replace the part. If a part is not working correctly, please let us know
about it. Manufacturing problems can occur, and we are grateful for any feedback
to let us know what needs fixing.
The guarantee does not cover the older kits (white needles, sky blue
cords), but spare parts are available and quite affordable. Post an e-mail to us
with
your exact replacement part needs (see eMail instructions
at bottom of page). The warranty does not cover the case
unless it arrives to you damaged. If this happens, please post an e-mail to us
with
your receipt number and let us know what the damage is
(see eMail instructions at bottom of page).
Occasional roughness on a molded part
Sometimes as a result of the plastics manufacturing process there can be
small rough spots on the needle or connecting tips. We’re continuing to work
with our manufacturer on making this a less frequent occurrence, but if you do
find roughness on any of the parts, there’s a very simple solution. If you have
a fingernail buffing board around, that works wonderfully to smooth any
roughness without damaging the part. If you do not have a buffing board, a fine
piece of sandpaper (600 grit) does a great job.

The Story
Of Denise
by Linda Krag
My grandmother taught me to knit when I was a girl. In the late 1970’s while
living in Central California, I picked up some raw fleece and couldn’t let it
go. Spinning became a passion. The "uniqueness" of my early handspun yarn
required a wide range of needle sizes.
When I discovered Denise, I was thrilled to find all the needle
sizes I needed in one compact and affordable kit. I bought one right away for
myself, and told my mother-in-law about it too. My mother-in-law’s set was
eventually given to my daughter, Emily, who used it regularly until it
disappeared during a college move.
In early 2002, after over 20 years of happily using the Denise set,
I went in search of some extra parts and a new set for Emily. I couldn’t find
any current listings for the Denise company, and I went back to old
issues of Knitter’s. I finally found an old ad and called the number
listed. Lorraine Linstead answered the phone and told me that some parts were
available, but they hadn’t manufactured for several years, due to illness and
getting up in years.
At the end of our conversation, Lorraine said, "And if you know of anyone
interested, the company is for sale." There I was in my mid-50s, a full-time
high school teacher and avid knitter, never been in business before…but I
couldn’t get the idea out of my head.
So step-by-step with a lot of encouragement from my fiber friends, four of
whom had Denise kits, my husband and I decided to go for it. In August
of 2002, we bought the company. I retired from teaching in December, and though
I loved my job, I am thoroughly enjoying this process of reviving such a
wonderful product and hearing every day from happy Denise knitters.
The Denise Interchangeable Knitting Needle kit is the
invention of Lorraine and Robert Linstead, who manufactured and sold them for
over two decades. Prior to developing Denise, they designed what is now
called the Boye Needlemaster. However, the Linsteads were not satisfied
with the design, particularly the problem of needles unscrewing and discoloring.
They developed Denise Interchangeable Knitting Needles as an improved
product with a unique locking system and light but strong plastic needles -- a
better kit for less money.
We are continuing in the Linstead’s tradition of manufacturing a quality
product at an affordable price. We are a family business. Emily and I take care
of the day-to-day operations and manufacturing details. My husband, Jim (a
physician in his other life) advises on technical, financial and marketing
matters, and my daughter Ellen adds her artistic and advisory talents. We are a
company of knitters for knitters. We hope you enjoy your Denise
Interchangeable Knitting Needles as much as we have.
